What if celebrating freedom meant slowing down together?

Welcome to The Freedom Fast.

The Freedom Fast is part of a national celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In the months leading up to July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress called for national days of fasting and reflection. The signers of the Declaration, coming from diverse religious traditions, recognized that the Creator who endowed us with certain unalienable rights — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — also calls us to pause, reflect, and then act.

Fasting is not limited to one faith. Sixteen of the world’s major religions include fasting as part of their tradition and practice. Today, we invite you to choose a fast, regardless of your religious persuasion or nonreligious orientation. You might fast from a meal, from social media, or from another daily priority.

We encourage you to observe your fast on or around the fourth of each month leading up to July 4, 2026. Gather as a family, congregation, workplace, school, or community organization. Choose a fast together. Discuss the significance of coming together and explore the values that shaped our nation.

Visit our website to share what you did and how you observed your fast. To conclude, consider hosting a “breaking the fast” gathering around a common meal.

Let’s celebrate our freedom by choosing to come together, regardless of our differences.
